Lori Vilagos- Sweetman

A lifelong admirer of the rural landscape, Lori Vilagos-Sweetman has spent her entire life in the picturesque mountains of New Jersey. Growing up in Morris County during a time of transition from farmland to suburban development, she developed a deep appreciation for the unspoiled beauty of nature. This love for the land not only shaped her artistic vision but also deepened her spiritual connection to the forests, where she found solace and a profound sense of interconnectedness.

Lori earned her BA in Visual Arts and Art Education, studying under distinguished artists such as Judith Peck, Shalom Gorewitz, and Warner Wada. Early in her career, her art focused on capturing the serene landscapes of New Jersey, particularly the lakes and forests that became a source of healing after the loss of her firstborn child. At the time, Lori was also beginning to wrestle with feelings of disconnection from the heteronormative life she had been living, a journey that would later become central to her identity and creative exploration.

Now married to her wife, Dana, and living in Warren County, NJ, with their two children and adult nephew, Lori’s artistic focus has evolved. Her recent work delves into the nostalgia of watching her children discover their own spiritual connection to nature and her awakening to her sexual and gender identity. These experiences have brought new depth to her art, which resonates with themes of family, identity, and the transformative power of the natural world. Central to her work is the belief that we are all deeply connected—through nature, through shared experiences, and through the energy that flows between us.

Lori’s artwork has been exhibited in galleries across New Jersey and New York and is held in private collections. In addition to her artistic practice, Lori has been teaching art to elementary school students in Chester for over 20 years, empowering young artists to embrace their own creative journeys.
